How did this happen?  I’m out of Diet Coke.  How in the heck am I going to survive the morning?  I suppose I could drink the Diet root beer we have in the fridge, but it’s just not the same.  For one thing, it says no caffeine, and seriously, what’s the point if there’s no caffeine!

My husband loves Pepsi.  LOVES it.  We have Pepsi Max, Diet Pepsi Wild Cherry, AND regular Pepsi in the fridge, and I could drink that…it has caffeine…but it’s PEPSI. Far inferior to my beloved Diet Coke.

Diet Coke and I began our sordid love affair way back when I was a freshman in college. My mom never had a lot of pop (that’s what us Northeast Ohioans call it) in the house because we didn’t have a whole lot of money, so Coke was rare.  When I went to college and realized my food card could buy me a case of Diet Coke at the deli, I was a force to be reckoned with.  I had what some people might call an addiction.

I don’t think 6-10 cans a day is necessarily an addiction, do you?  I have since backed down to a measly 1-3 a day, supplementing my addiction with the Caffeine FREE kind at night.  My doctor has encouraged me to try this new thing called WATER.  I argue that pop has water in it, and he should be glad that I’m drinking so much, but he never looks truly convinced.

I still don’t know how I ran out.  I have an idea though. My 15 year old son has developed a taste for the DC, and since I don’t actively monitor what he sneaks from the fridge while I’m chasing down two 2 year olds, he probably has a hoard of my pop up in his room.

Is that a groundable offense?

I’m going to have to start a spreadsheet or something. I cannot have this happen again.  The neighbors are probably going to call the cops when they see me in the front window clutching my chest in despair over the loss of my Diet Coke, and the screams of agony will probably wake up the kids.

Deep breaths…I will get through this…
